Test steps

  1. Open S1 plug connection.
    a. Power winding:
    Measure resistance between contacts 2 and 52 or 53 of cable 1.
    RTarget = 11-20 Ω.
    b. Measuring winding:
    Measure resistance between contacts 14 and 31 or 49. RTarget = 5-10 Ω. If R = RTarget,
    continue with 4.
  2. Open S3.
    a. Power winding:
    Measure resistance between contacts M and A or B (cable harness) or PB and -UB (measuring cable).
    RTarget = 11-20 Ω.
    b. Measuring winding:
    Check resistance between contacts d and h or j (cable harness) or PBM and SENSE (measuring cable).
    RTarget = 5-10 Ω.
  3. Remove control cover. Open S4.
    a. Power winding:
    Measure resistance between pin contacts 4 and 2 of tab connector of PB solenoid.
    RTarget = 11 ± 0.7 Ω.
    b. Measuring winding:
    Measure resistance between pin contacts 3 and 1 of tab connector of PB solenoid.
    RTarget = 5.2 ± 0.3 Ω.
  4. Check resistance between contact 14 and vehicle ground at open plug connection S1.
    RTarget = ∞ Ω.
    Check resistance between contacts 14 and 2.
    RTarget = ∞ Ω.
  5. Check resistance between contact d (or PBM) and ground at open plug connection S3.
    RTarget = ∞ Ω.
    Check resistance between contacts d (or PBM) and M (or PB).
    RTarget = ∞ Ω.
  6. Check resistance between contacts 1 and 4 to ground at open plug connection S4. RTarget = ∞ Ω. Check resistance between contacts 1 and 4. RTarget = ∞ Ω.

Resistance characteristics

When measuring the coil resistances, please observe the dependence on the temperature.
Simultaneously to the resistance measurement, the temperature of the solenoid enclosure has to measured, too, or estimated with utmost accuracy. Read the target resistance from the temperature resistance curve below, assuming the measured or estimated temperature, and compare it to the measured value.

Operating coil

Measure the resistance between pin 4 and pin 2.
The operating coil is intact when the measured resistance deviates from the target resistance by no more than ± 1 Ω approximately.

Measuring coil

Measure the resistance between pin 1 and pin 3.
The measuring coil is intact when the measured resistance deviates from the target resistance by no more than ± 0.5 Ω approximately.
No resistance - no connection - must be measurable between the pins and the solenoid's housing; the resistance is infinitely great.
