SORT Standardized On-Road Tests

SORT is a project between bus carriers and manufacturers for developing standardized fuel consumption tests for buses. Apart from factors such as the loading status of a vehicle, the vehicle application is decisive for fuel consumption. SORT defines three different application scenarios for buses.

  • SORT 1 Heavy city traffic

Heavy city traffic is defined with 40% dwell times and approximately 6 stops per kilometer. This corresponds to a traffic situation in the centers of large cities (e.g., in the center of Paris or London).

  • SORT 2 Light city traffic

Light city traffic is defined with 35% dwell times and approximately 3 stops per kilometer. This corresponds to a traffic situation in cities (such as Madrid or Munich).

  • SORT 3 Suburban traffic

Suburban traffic is representative of the traffic situation in suburbs and smaller towns (e.g., suburbs of Paris or small towns).
