The Scourcer / CAN source address configuration

"Scourcer" is an artificial word that stands for scan source addresses. The function of the Scourcer is to compare the CAN settings for the SAE-J1939 (vehicle standard) receive messages defined in the dataset to the actually existing source addresses in the vehicle. In short: The CAN messages to be received by the transmission control unit and the corresponding receive addresses have been set in the dataset. For example, it can be set that the transmission control unit expects the CAN message EBC1 from the CAN controller (sender) "0Bh". For proper functioning of the transmission it must be ensured that all expected CAN receive messages arrive with the correct source addresses.

The Scourcer scans every relevant CAN receive message whether:

  • the message is currently provided on the CAN bus with the source address set in the dataset.
  • the message is currently provided on the CAN bus with another source address than set in the dataset.

If a CAN message is received with another source address, the dataset must be adjusted accordingly. If a CAN message is not received, this must be changed in the vehicle. In both cases, please contact the Voith customer service first.

Scourcer report contents:

The display of the Scourcer - Structure

Status CAN message ECU Additional BUS address
Status Long name Short name RCV ID hex ID dec Source address dataset RCV ID Source address #1 ID Source address #2 ID Source address #3
The status of the individual messages is displayed here.

All CAN messages entered in the dataset are displayed with their long and short name.

The message is received with correct source address.

ID of the source address entered in the dataset.

ID of the source address entered in the dataset.

The message is received with correct source address.

The CAN receive message is received from another source address than set in the dataset. Because it is possible that several senders send the same message, the Scourcer can differentiate between up to three different senders.
  The following states exist:
= everything is all right
= fault. The message is sent via the wrong address.
= warning. The message is not sent or is received from two different addresses.

The display for a correctly configured vehicle always has the following form in the Scourcer:

Status CAN message ECU Additional BUS address
Status Long name Short name RCV ID hex ID dec Source address dataset RCV ID Source address #1 ID Source address #2 ID Source address #3

Electronic engine controller #1 EEC1 00h 0 Engine #1 FFh GLOBAL FFh GLOBAL FFh GLOBAL
Electronic engine controller #2 EEC2 00h 0 Engine #1 FFh GLOBAL FFh GLOBAL FFh GLOBAL
Electronic engine controller #3 EEC3 00h 0 Engine #1 FFh GLOBAL FFh GLOBAL FFh GLOBAL

If the display of the Scourcer in the vehicle does not have this format, please contact the Voith customer service with your ECU file.

Display example:

Status CAN message ECU Additional BUS address
Status Long name Short name RCV ID hex ID dec Source address dataset RCV ID Source address #1 ID Source address #2 ID Source address #3
