Using the Actuator Test window


The actuator test supports targeted troubleshooting on the solenoid valve. Most of the troubleshooting mechanisms on the solenoid valves also work during the normal mode and can therefore detect faults without actuator test. Nevertheless, an actuator test is required. It is used to detect faults that:
  • can be detected only if the solenoid valve has been energized.
  • can be detected only after an OFF/ON or an ON/OFF change of the solenoid valve control.
  • cannot be allocated causally and definitely during driving because several solenoid valves are switched on at the same time.
  • can be detected by the audible cyclical opening when the valves are controlled individually (e.g., if a solenoid valve piston is not running smoothly).

The actuator test is available as of transmission software version E300.1-D5.0.0.0. The transmission software version used is displayed in the report.

 

How to open the Diagnosis - Actuator Test:

Click Service > Actuator test in the main window. The requirements for an actuator test will be displayed. Click: OK, as soon as all requirements have been met.

How to stop communication with the transmission control unit:

Click the symbol to stop communication with the transmission control unit.  This function is required for debugging tasks only.

How to carry out an actuator test:

The following requirements must be met for an actuator test:

  • Engine standstill!
  • Vehicle standstill!
  • Parking brake must be applied!
  • Neutral position of the transmission (N key actuated)!
  • Closed safety switch!

The safety switch is an internal electronic switch in the transmission control unit that de-energizes all solenoid valves automatically if it detects a dangerous condition. For further information, please see: Safety switch.

The conditions that are not met will be displayed. In principle, there are two methods of carrying out an actuator test:

  • Click Auto Test. First, all solenoid valves are controlled cyclically at a frequency of 2 Hz, the controllable solenoid valves (SK, EK, DK, PB, TB and RBK) are controlled subsequently. Cyclical opening / controlling of a solenoid valve is indicated by the light green backlight and a solenoid valve symbol that is highlighted blue. If a solenoid valve malfunctions, the fault will be displayed including the fault type.

In this example, a short-circuit to ground was detected at the SK solenoid valve. 

  • You can also perform a targeted check of an individual solenoid valve. To do so, click the required solenoid valve. The solenoid valve is controlled cyclically with 2 Hz (2 ON/OFF changes per second) until the test is complete. This test is especially suitable for checking the smooth running of a solenoid valve piston by its audible cyclical opening. If a solenoid valve malfunctions, the fault will be displayed including the fault type.

Faults detected during an actuator test are indicated by a red "X". If a fault has occurred, carry out an upload in any case.  This creates an ECU report automatically. The ECU report shows all faults that have occurred including the cause and instructions in the 'Event memory' area. For further information, please see: Upload and Report.

The smooth running of a solenoid valve piston cannot be recorded by ALADIN, you must check instead, whether the cyclical opening is audible. 

The cyclical control is also required for detecting short-circuits and line interruptions in individual solenoid valves. A definite detection is not always possible during normal operation. For example, the event memory indicates short-circuits to ground for several solenoid valves. Always carry out an actuator test in such a case.
