SORT Standardized On-Road Tests

SORT is a project between bus operators and manufacturers for the development of standardized fuel consumption tests for buses. In addition to factors such as the load condition of a vehicle, the vehicle use is decisive for the fuel consumption. SORT defines three different deployment scenarios for buses.

  • SORT 1 Heavy city traffic / Heavy urban
Heavy city traffic is defined with 40% dwell times and approximately 6 stops per kilometer. This corresponds to a traffic situation in the centers of large cities (e.g. in the center of Paris or London).
  • SORT 2 Light city traffic / Light urban
Light city traffic is defined with 35% dwell times and approximately 3 stops per kilometer. This corresponds to a traffic situation in large cities (e.g. Madrid or Munich).
  • SORT 3 Suburb traffic / Sub urban
Local traffic represents the traffic situation in suburbs and towns (e.g. suburban areas of Paris or small towns).
  • Overland traffic / Inter city
Overland traffic is not defined in SORT.
